Inside the Show: "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike"
The first time I heard about Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike was in 2013 when on vacation in NYC. My dad tried to convince me and some others on the trip, that we should go and see it. Sadly he couldn't convince any of us to go see it even though we coud have seen Sigourney Weaver play Masha. Instead we saw a show staring six puppets.
Fast forward to 2018 when the Yorkshire Playhouse decided to add Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike to their 2018 Season. My dad jumped at the opportunity to direct the show he had missed out seeing live on Broadway. When I first decided to tryout for the show it wasn't because I thought the show was this amazing thing I had to be apart of but it was to get to be in a play that my dad was directing. I hadn't been in a show that he had directed since 2006 when I played Mrs. Darling in Peter Pan. I wanted to have the opportunity to be in a non-children's theatre show of his.
After receiving the part of Nina and diving into rehearsals, I slowly developed a love and appreciation not only for the charactors in the show but also for the show its self. Even though this show is a comedy, there is so much more meaning and love in the background that if you take a deeper look you'll see. I say one of my favorite messages from the show is that we shouldn't take our family for granited and even when we mess up they'll always be there for us!
We are about to start our second week of the show and I just hope that we can share this amazing story with even more people and help them to find the deeper meanings along with the funny moments. I look forward to hearing more audience members telling us how much they loved the show and what a great story it is.
If I could go back in time, I would take my dad up on going and seeing the show that stared Sigourney Weaver live on Broadway!
