Toodles of Treasure Town and Her Snowman, Opening Soon!
Giant snow globes, singing cockatoos, talking cats, and a wacky adventure? Toodles of Treasure Town and Her Snowman has it all! John I. Baker III takes up the role of director for the Yorkshire Playhouse Children’s Theater once again, with a script he wrote himself!
Toodles is an adaptation of Frederic Chapin’s book Toodles of Treasure Town and Her Snowman, which was originally published in 1908. Chapin was friends with L. Frank Baum, the famous author of the sensational story The Wizard of Oz. Chapin even wrote music that was featured in musicals based on Baum’s books. Frederic Chapin’s second book, Pinky and the Plumed Knight, is also a fantastical book that John I. Baker III plans to adapt into a play.
Baker says his version of Toodles has a few differences from the original book. In addition to updating the language to be more appropriate for modern audiences, Baker says he added a few scenes here and there to highlight different characters. Some story elements have been changed as well, but in the interest of keeping the plot unspoiled, I won’t reveal what those are!
With a cast of 55 local children between the ages of 7 and 18, rehearsals have been a mixture of excitement and challenges. Come and watch the hard work all of the kids have put into this goofy, adventurous production! Toodles hits the stage this weekend!
