Yorkshire Playhouse Presents: You Can't Take It With You
What does the ideal family look like? Is it two parents doting on their wonderful children? Perfect dinners with food and china set just-so? Is it the kind of family that makes outsiders think covetously, ‘look at all the good things we don’t have?’
Or is it like Alice Sycamore’s family: chaotic, sporadic, and unpredictable, but supportive and caring? Alice’s family boasts many members, including the tax-evading Grandma Vanderhoff and her daughter, Penelope, who, despite starting countless play scripts, has finished none of them. There’s Penelope’s husband, Paul, who shares his hobby of making fireworks with family friend Mr. De Pinna. And there’s Alice’s sister, Essie, who practices ballet with her Russian teacher Mr. Kolenkov, who frequents the home (often uninvited, but always welcome).
This crazy cast is only the start of the Vanderhoff/Sycamore household, and we haven’t even mentioned the snakes. Or Donald.
All is well in Alice’s unusual life, until the fateful day she brings her fiance to visit…and comes face-to-face with how unusual her life really is. Her fiance Tony, luckily, is quite enamored with Alice’s lifestyle. But can the same be said of his parents? You Can’t Take It With You comes to a dramatic peak when Tony’s parents drop in unexpectedly, right in the middle of the typical Vanderhoff/Sycamore craziness.
You Can’t Take It With You was performed by the Yorkshire Playhouse in 1985 and 2015, and it makes its return in 2023 for the Playhouse’s 50th season! Also making their return are C. Danielle Deal, Kelle Sweazy, and Jameson Trauger, who will be reprising their roles from the 2015 production!
