Lily Reviews: "Steel Magnolias"

80’s flair with big hair!

In its 3rd run at Yorkshire Playhouse to celebrate YP’s 50th season, “Steel Magnolias” took on the set challenges beautifully, featuring salon chairs, a hooded hair dryer, and stations with running water and fold out counters. “Steel Magnolias” is set in 1985 Louisiana, and the costumes do not disappoint when it comes to the fashion of the day, from fanny packs and bright tracksuits to cheetah print leggings and hot pink skirt suits. And of course, at a salon, hair and makeup are paramount: Colorful eyeshadow, pixie cuts, perms, fresh flowers, and generous spritzes of hairspray all take shape at Truvy’s.

Be prepared to chuckle and reach for the tissues in this show. As the story progresses, we learn that the salon is not only a hub for gossip and drama, but a haven for the hurting and a place for healing. Truvy’s confidence, Annelle’s shyness, Clairee’s wit, M’Lynn’s strength, Shelby’s liveliness, and Ouiser’s eccentrics are all vital to the salon as the six women rely on and support each other through the ups and downs of the year.

“Steel Magnolias” is a feminist, family-friendly tear-jerker that you won’t want to miss! Show dates are May 19, 25 and 26 at 7:30, and May 20, 21 and 28 at 2. Purchase tickets online at yorkshireplayhouse.com/box-office.
